November 20th is the National Teacher day in Vietnam. On this day, students of all ages will gather together to visit their teachers with flowers and presents. This practice is to show the traditional respect for teacher which is considered the noblest of all jobs in Vietnam. It is really interesting and inspiring to observe small, 10 or even 5-6 year old pupil carrying bunches of flowers with expecting faces for their turn. As the level of study moves up, this practice takes a rather more commercial sense. Yet, the beautiful meaning of it remains as ever.

what has become of phoco - old quater streets

Pho co is going to have national certificate for antique relics, but residents here are so sad because there is literally no old street left to preserve: the old quater streets have been deformed.
Here there are houses over 30 years of age never being restored for once. Over ten families share the same 80- centimeter wide path, some have to turn on the light all day and night because of the grudging gloom.
The state of modern and old buildings fighting each other, and along with that, poor living conditions for old house residents require urgent action from the government. It, after all, was rather too late.
A TIG in Vietnam is no longer an idea, but a project now. We have pulled our resources and could get the ball rolling. But I think we must..pull more. We need more heads and hands to help realize the project and get the pages done as much as possible. So all of you who are interested, please visit this website and try your ability http://groups.takingitglobal.org/vietnamese

Dear everyone,
To make our website a real active one, which could popularize our country, I would propose an idea of a small section inlcluded in our website. the namely ( for now) "understanding Vietnam" section will include your writing about many aspects of Vietnam. Sound full of big words, right? but it could be anything, as simple as the fish sauce. I know the idea of fish sauce could drive many foreigners sick but it is in fact extremely popular in our country, and there is an art of mixing fish sauce. And other sorts of things.
What is your idea?

It won't be long before our country could be featured on Taking It Global. Isn't it special, isn't it proud? I think it is and I think it is the great opportunity to tell more about Vietnam to the world. So why not take the chance and raise your voice?, on any issue and particularly on this month's theme: refugee. Otherwise you could add any updates or events in our country that you consider worthwhile of notice?
I know many of our members, especially those who have done a lot to Vietnam's TIG, are extremely busy. But the fact is, we are very proud of you and we need to show your achievements, what you have done and how your efforts have paid off? Which time would it be better than this time?
It won't be long, in fact, there is not much time left. I really hope our Vietnamese people could help do something on this occasion.
Best regards

Traffic in the eye of a foreigner

Chris Lorenzen is an Australian who have lived in Hanoi for over 2 years. He printed cards which tell people to respect the traffic law both in Vietnamese and English, and present this to anyone who break the law. Many times he got eyes bruised for his enthusiam.
Here is the cited content of his card ".. your selfish act of breaking the traffic law could kill other people....stop when the light turns red, watch out for other cars when you turn the corner....".
You could know more about his goodwill cards and what he think of the traffic problem in Hanoi on tintucvietnam website http://www.tintucvietnam.com.vn/Nhip-Song-Tre/2004/8/62428.ttvn
What strikes me is anyone but a foreigner could do this to Hanoi, with a simple yet meaningful act. Then I can't help thinking of the current law of compulsory helmet wearing, and the public's reluctance to perform it. What can we say about this?

I am a newmember and one recent day , this idea pops up in my mind: why are there so few Vietnamese members in this useful network(!), why don't we set up a page in our own language to popularize this website and collect more ideas and contributions. I hope to have your opinions and participation very very soon.
